WASHINGTON, DC, April 29th, 2013 — UndergroundMusic.fm wants to make underground music mainstream. The startup has officially launched a new Internet service that provides a simple way to play and share underground music.

“It sounds paradoxical because it’s never been possible before,” says co-founder Max Acchione. “The underground has always been the source of musical innovation: blues, jazz, rock, punk, hip-hop, electronic, etc., and being inside it as it happens is exciting. It’s hard to experience because it’s so spread out and recording and distribution have been expensive. That’s why we have a mainstream in the first place. But today, the underground is thriving with affordable recording technology and it can be directly accessed through the Internet on ubiquitous devices.”

The music on UndergroundMusic.fm is uploaded by artists in a continual flow and curated by the crowd, friends, or the individual tastes of users. It’s cloud-based so there are no files to download or manage and it can be used on any web-enabled mobile device, desktop, or home theater.

“People can now directly access the source of new music and be a part of it,” Acchione says. “It’s a more connected and meaningful musical experience that doesn’t have the costs, territory restrictions, consumption limits, intrusive ads, or repetitiveness found in current mainstream channels. We’re creating an easy way to do it.”

The service features a blended click and play interface where users can actively filter and browse music, or leave it alone to play passively like a radio. Songs can also be saved as favorites or combined into sharable playlists.

From an artist’s perspective, UndergroundMusic.fm offers an easy way to connect with new audiences. It provides free marketing for album releases, merchandise, shows, and overall brand through the use of free music. It’s a system that mutually benefits artists and listeners.
