What I Wish (Indie) Musicians Understood

I’ve been working with recording “artists” and musicians most of my adult life. For the past 10 years exclusively I’ve been either managing or developing (or both) artists and bands in the USA and around the world. Since the music industry is going through a major paradigm shift (mainly thanks to digital downloads) it’s always interesting to see how musicians adapt and how their expectations change.

Is Indie Music Dead?

I hear all the time that music sales are dead and nobody pays for it anymore. Derek Sivers, of CD Baby fame, told me in an e-mail conversation that “the music business might end up kinda like the poetry business is today. That is: there are a few who are able to be full time poets, but nobody would get into poetry for the money.” If you had to ask me, though, I’d say there’s still hope as indie artists — we’re just not doing it right.

Competition and Music

Big-break opportunities are hard to find these days. Well, I guess they always have been… until now maybe. I came across an interesting music startup, albeit in its infancy, but an interesting idea none-the-less. They have taken the battle-of-the-bands model and use it to connect musicians with prizes and fans.

As a perennial aspiring musician, and one with endless amounts of curiosity, I contacted the founders who said that aside from the $500 cash prize up on the site now, many more prizes such as gigs and festival slots would be open for “battle” soon.
